I love to watch my children. I love to play with them too, but some really cool stuff happens when I take a step back to observe. Ella has recently started dressing herself. This is great. She is feeling independent and saving me five minutes in the morning. I am so proud of her for taking this on without being asked. She comes out with some pretty funny outfits and I let her wear whatever she wants so she does not get discouraged. This morning I witnessed something pretty cute that I thought I would share. She went and put on her Dora underwear, and Las Vegas Tshirt and then started looking for pants. I could hear her muttering under her breath to herself about finding her “library pants”. I don’t know what these are but she was not happy that she couldn’t find them. After about three minutes of looking through her drawer she came into the living room in her underwear and shirt and tilted her head back to the ceiling…..this is the conversation we just had.
Ella; {looking at sky} God! Jesus! Come on God! JEEEESUS!!!
Me; Ella, why are you calling God and Jesus?
Ella; Because they took my pants.
Me; How do you know God and Jesus took your pants?
Ella; Because they are lost.
{Picks up phone and dials}
Ella; Hello God? Hi.
Jesus? Hi.
I need my pants.
Do you have them?
Because I need them.
God? Oh ok.
Ok Jesus.
{hangs up}
Me; Did you just phone God?
Ella; Yes. He has my pants and he said he won’t give them back.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could just pick up the phone and call God?
Maybe we can….I guess I will have to ask Ella for the number.
There’s something about a child’s innocence that is just so pure. I am trying to live more through the eyes of my children. I am focusing on putting down the laundry basket and looking at the world the way they see it. Today I lied on the floor with Isaac and watched the ceiling fan going around, it looked like the roof was trying to move itself. Yesterday I spent an hour with Ella trying to escape from the crocodile that was hiding under our coffee table. It was trying to eat our toes.
This is my daily challenge for myself; to take the time to allow the world to stop and to look at things with the mind of a child.
Imagine.
